Security has many definitions and different meanings to many people. One of my favorites is one of Webster’s Dictionary’s definitions “Freedom from risk; Safety.” While we will never be free from risk, it should be a goal of everyone in the technology field to strive to be as free from risk as possible when it comes to threats to your network and the sensitive data that is on your network. Almost anyone in the field will tell you that the number one risk to the security of any network is the users. The majority of the time it is not malicious, it is a lack of education, clicking on a link in an E-mail that looks legitimate, etc. Of course education alone will not keep your network and sensitive data secure or “Free from risk”, it is an important step in securing your network.
In an effort to assist the school districts of the State of Mississippi in teaching Network User Security Awareness, MDE is providing this document as a starting point for providing the much needed training. Please feel free to download and use this document to aid you in teaching Network User Security to all users on your network.
